LEXINGTON, Va. — The Holy Cross baseball team's rally fell just short in a back-and-forth contest at the Virginia Military Institute, with the Crusaders falling 11-10 on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Gray-Minor Stadium.
The Crusaders trailed 11-8 late, and scored two runs in the eighth to cut close, but were unable to complete the comeback.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when senior first baseman Chris Benton had a sac fly to score freshman second baseman CJ Egrie.
- VMI scored three runs off an RBI single and two-run homer in the bottom half of the frame to jump in front, 3-1.
- Junior right fielder Jake McElroy and sophomore shortstop Brendan Jones led off the second inning with back-to-back singles, and scored on a two-run double by freshman center fielder Jack Toomey to even things up. Senior right-handed pitcher Luke Fox then struck out the side in the bottom of the second.
- The Keydets scored three runs in the bottom of the third to jump back ahead, 6-3.
- The Crusaders tied the game again with an RBI single by Toomey and a two-run single by sophomore third baseman Connor Peek in the top of the fourth. Egrie and Benton each followed with RBI singles to push Holy Cross in the lead, 8-6.
- VMI immediately responded with a four-run bottom of the fourth to regain the lead.
- Shortstop Zac Morris scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to extend the Keydets' lead to 11-8.
- Sophomore left fielder Connor Cooney hit a one-out double in the eighth inning and scored on a single to center by Egrie. Egrie stole second, and then advanced to third on a single by sophomore designated hitter Sean Scanlon; Benton hit another sacrifice fly to bring Holy Cross within 11-10.
- Rookie right-handed pitcher Jaden Wywoda threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth, capped with a strikeout looking, to keep VMI off the board.
- The Keydets contained Holy Cross' bats in the top of the ninth to prevent any more of a rally.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Holy Cross' 16 hits are the most by the Crusaders in a single game this season.
- Six Crusaders had multi-hit games.
DUE UP:
- Holy Cross and VMI will round out the weekend series with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday, Feb. 26 at Gray-Minor Stadium.
