Women's hockey prepares to close regular season against Connecticut

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team resumes its series with Connecticut on Feb. 17 and 18. The Crusaders will return to Storrs, Conn. for their last road game of the regular season. Puck drop is slated for 6 p.m.
 
On Saturday, Holy Cross will host the Huskies for its final regular season contest. This game will serve as senior night at the Hart Center Rink, with the members of the program's senior class being honored in a special pregame ceremony. The six Crusader seniors are Carly Beniek, Kailey Langefels, Mary Edmonds, Darci Johal, Sofia Smithson and Lily Cataldo. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m.
 
Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE CRUSADERS (7-23-1, 6-19-0 Hockey East): 
  • Edmonds has recorded 11 points in her last 13 games. She has set a career-high in goals this season with ten. Her latest goal was against New Hampshire on Feb. 5. She, also, tallied an assist against the Wildcats, bringing her point total to a team-high, 16.
  • Freshman Alexia Moreau owns the second-highest goal total with eight. She scored the game-winning goal against Maine, to lead the Crusaders to a 2-1 overtime win. Moreau leads the freshmen class in points with nine.
  • Smithson holds the team-high in assists with 11 and the second-highest point total with 14.
  • Freshman forward Charlotte Sonntag logged the game-winning goal against the Huskies on Saturday. Her first career goal marked her second point of the season and earned her recognition by Hockey East as Rookie of the Week.
  • Junior goaltender Madison Beck and freshman Brooke Loranger both spent time in between the pipes throughout the season. Beck owns 669 saves, a .924 save percentage and a goals-against average of 2.57. Loranger has tallied 298 saves, a .909 save percentage and a goals-against average of 3.14 during her rookie season.
  • The Crusaders' defense has remained consistent with a high volume of blocked shots. They rank first in Hockey East with a total of 410 with an average of 13.23 blocks per game. Sophomore defenseman Emma Min leads the Crusaders with 55, ranking third in Hockey East. She is closely followed by sophomore Carmen Elliott (49) and Langefels (46).
  • The Crusaders set a program record for most wins in Hockey East play since joining the conference in 2018-19, after defeating UConn.
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE HUSKIES (16-12-4, 10-11-4 Hockey East): 
  • Connecticut is coming off a two-loss weekend against then-No. 5 Northeastern on Friday night, followed by a 2-1 loss to Holy Cross on Saturday. The Huskies have fallen out of the top 15 ranking, following the two losses. 
  • Senior forward Coryn Tormala leads the Huskies in assists (11) and points (19), recording her latest point with a goal against the Crusaders on Saturday. 
  • Junior forward Jada Habisch holds the team-high goal total with 11, after scoring two goals against Maine on Jan. 27.
  • Sophomore Tia Chan has spent the majority of the season in goal for the Huskies. Chan has posted 563 saves in 23 games. She owns a 1.71 goals-against average with a save percentage of .934.
  • Sophomore Megan Warrener owns a goals-against average of 1.90 and a save percentage of .916. She has tallied 185 saves in nine games.
LAST TIME THEY MET:
  • These programs had their first meeting of the season on Saturday, Feb. 11, with the Crusaders taking a 2-1 victory over the then-No. 15 Huskies.
  • Beniek and Sonntag recorded the goals for the Crusaders, as Johal, junior Lilly Feeney, sophomore Madison Michals and freshman Alexis Perry tallied assists. 
  • Beck recorded 31 saves for Holy Cross, while Chan posted 21 for UConn.
