Crusaders take down Boston University 71-69

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior guard Bo Montgomery hit a turnaround jumper in the lane as time expired, to break a 69-69 tie and lift the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 71-69 victory over Boston University at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Crusaders improve to 10-18 overall and 7-8 in the Patriot League, while the Terriers fall to 12-16 on the year and 5-10 in the conference.

Montgomery finished the night with 16 points, three rebounds and three assists, while junior guard Joe Octave totaled 18 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Senior forward Gerrale Gates recorded 12 points, eight rebounds and two assists, and junior guard Nolan Dorsey added 11 points, six rebounds and three assists. Boston University was led by Walter Whyte with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Terriers started the game hot, jumping out to an early 14-4 advantage after the first seven minutes of action. Holy Cross responded with a 13-2 run to pull in front, and neither team would lead by more than three points for the rest of the half. The Crusaders eventually took a one-point lead (32-31) into the locker room.

Holy Cross was still up by one (34-33) early in the second half, when it used a 22-7 spurt to claim its biggest lead of the night (56-40 with 12 minutes left to play). Boston University refused to go quietly, coming back with a 14-2 run to trim the deficit to four (58-54) with seven minutes remaining. The Terriers eventually regained the lead (67-66), before Dorsey hit a key three-pointer with 2:48 on the clock to put the Crusaders back on top. After a put-back by Otto Landrum tied the score at 69-69, neither team would score again until Montgomery's game-winning shot at the final buzzer.

Holy Cross made 44.3 percent of its field goal attempts and 50.0 percent of its three-pointers on the night. Boston University held a 44-37 rebounding advantage, but made only 41.7 percent of its shots from the floor and 19.0 percent of its attempts from three-point range.

The Crusaders will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, when they travel to Colgate for a 2 p.m. game.

• Holy Cross is now in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Patriot League with American and Lafayette, with all three schools owning 7-8 records in conference play.
