Friers records career-high 19 saves as men's lacrosse falls to Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Syracuse University, 15-6, on Sunday afternoon at JMA Wireless Dome.

Senior attackman Thomas McIntire led the way for the Crusaders (0-3, 0-0 PL) with three goals, good for his third-straight game with a hat trick and extending his scoring streak to eight games. Junior netminder Dawson Friers recorded 19 saves on the day, while freshman Liam Ray picked up his first career save in relief.

Syracuse (3-0, 0-0 ACC) was led by Joey Spallina, who recorded seven points (5-2-7), and Finn Thomson, who netted four goals. Netminder Will Mark made 9 saves in the contest, while Harrison Thompson added two in relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Syracuse got off to a hot start, netting five goals to open the first quarter.
  • McIntire picked up his first goal of the day with three minutes remaining in the frame to close out the quarter at 5-1.
  • Senior Dean DiNanno netted his second goal of the season to open the second quarter.
  • Syracuse then went on a 9-0 scoring run spanning the remainder of the second quarter, and the entirety of the third.
  • McIntire opened the fourth quarter with his second goal of the afternoon.
  • After Syracuse scored their final goal of the contest, McIntire picked up his third goal of the game.
  • Freshmen Will Messineo and Brendan Lane each picked up their first career goals in the final three minutes of the contest.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Holy Cross held the edge in face offs, 14-11.
  • Friers' and Ray's combined 20 saves against the Orange were the most by a team against Syracuse this season.

UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross rounds out their road trip on Saturday, Feb. 18, when they visit Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.
  • Game time is set for 12:30 p.m. at Five Star Stadium.
