WORCESTER, Mass.- The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team will take a trip to the city for a night game at Boston University (BU) on Friday, Dec. 8. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena. Fans can watch the broadcast on ESPN+.
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (5-10-2, 2-7-2 Hockey East):
- The Crusaders took a road trip up north to face New Hampshire (UNH) and Maine this past weekend. Holy Cross took on the Wildcats on Friday, Dec. 1 playing a hard fought game but ultimately taking a 1-0 loss. The Crusader continued their trip with a game against Maine on Saturday, Dec. 2 and fell to the Black Bears 6-0.
- Senior forward Millie Sirum is currently leading the charge as Holy Cross's leading scorer with seven goals on the year. Sophomore defenseman Casey Borgiel has racked up nine assists so far this season, the most of the Crusaders. Sirum and sophomore forward Alexia Moreau hold the most points for Holy Cross with 14 each. Junior defensemen Emilie Fortunato, Emma Min and Carmen Elliott led the Crusaders defense in blocked shots. Fortunato and Min are tied with 23 blocks a piece followed closely by Elliott who has 22 on the season.
- Senior goalie Madison Beck was between the pipes for both games this past weekend. She made 27 saves in the UNH game and another 27 in the Maine game. She now has a 2.17 goals against average and a .926 save percentage this season.
TIPS ON THE TERRIERS (4-8-1, 1-6-1 Hockey East):
- Boston University (BU) concluded the 2022-23 season with a 11-20-3 overall record and 9-15-3 conference record. The Terriers finished in seventh place in the Hockey East and fell to Merrimack at home 5-4 in overtime in the Hockey East first round.
- The Terriers most recently hosted Northeastern on Friday, Dec. 1 taking a close 2-1 loss in overtime. BU then made their way to Providence, R.I. for a Saturday afternoon game on Dec. 2 against the Friar. The two teams tied at the end of regulation and five minutes of overtime 3-3. Providence came out with the extra point in league standings taking the 3-2 shootout victory in 10 rounds.
- The Terriers took the 1-0 lead in the second period after neither team managed to net a goal in the first period. The goal was scored by sophomore forward Clara Yuhn assisted by senior forward Lacey Martin and freshman forward Alex Law at 8:13. BU held off the Huskies attack until the third period at 15:35 when Northeastern equalized the game 1-1 forcing the competition into overtime. The Huskies ended up taking home the 2-1 win after 4 minutes of overtime play.
- Game two of the weekend had a strong start with the Terriers netting two goals within four minutes of each other for the 2-0 lead in the first period. Senior defenseman Tamara Giaquinto scored at 10:27 assisted by senior forward Catherine Foulem and Law. Graduate defenseman Nadia Mativi put in the second goal at 15:27 and was assisted by Law and junior forward Ani FitzGerald.
- Providence answered back with a goal scored one minute into the second period to cut the Terriers lead in half. BU extended its lead at 9:27 with a short handed goal scored by sophomore defenseman Brooke Disher assisted by Mattivi and junior forward Christina Vote to end the second period with a 3-1 advantage.
- The Friars netted their second goal in the third period at 13:00 and tied the game at 17:50 to end regulation play 3-3. Neither team managed to get ahead in overtime leading to a tie. To decide the extra point in league standings, the two teams battled it out in shootouts. Providence came out with the 3-2 shootout win after 10 rounds of competition to earn the extra point.
- Graduate goalie Alexa Matses was in goal for both games on the weekend for the Terriers. She made 21 saves against Northeastern and 23 saves against Providence. Matses currently has a 2.60 goals against average and a .897 save percentage on the year.
- Martin is currently the Terriers leader in all major offensive categories with seven goals, nine assists and 16 points on the year. Mattivi leads the defense with 18 blocks so far this season.
LAST TIME THEY MET:
- Holy Cross and BU met last year with the Crusaders last hosting the Terriers for their final matchup of the season. Holy Cross took a 2-1 overtime win over BU on Jan. 13. The Crusaders are on an all-time two game win streak.
- The Crusaders hold a 4-10-0 all-time series and 3-9-0 all-time conference record against the Terriers.
