WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team wrapped up their nonconference schedule with a 55-43 victory against Merrimack on Education Day in a packed Hart Center Area full of Worcester school students.
The win is the fourth over the last six games for the Crusaders as they move to 6-5 on the year while the Warriors fall to 3-10.
Three players scored in double figures for Holy Cross including senior
Cara McCormack who dropped a team-high 14 points while grabbing a career-high eight rebounds with four assists, three three-pointers and a steal.
Sophomore
Simone Foreman had an efficient stat line scoring 12 points on 5-of-10 (50 percent) shooting with seven boards, a career-high matching three steals and two assists. Senior
Bronagh Power-Cassidy added 11 points, three rebounds, two three balls and a steal.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders jumped out to a 11-4 lead thanks to a Foreman three from the top of the point at the 6:03 mark. A Power-Cassidy basket, her eighth point of the quarter moved the Crusaders ahead 13-4 at the 4:58 mark. Senior Janelle Allen made it 19-12 before the end of the stanza.
- Both teams combined to go 1-of-15 (6.7 percent) from the field over the first 5:08 of the second quarter. A Merrimack three pulled them within five, but sophomore Meg Cahalan countered with a three of her own regaining an eight point lead. McCormack drained a baseline jumper opening up a 10 point halftime edge.
- A McCormack triple opened up a 13 point lead a few minutes into the third. Another McCormack three increased the margin to 14, 39-25 with 6:29 left. Merrimack outscored Holy Cross 7-2 to trail 41-32 after third quarter.
- The Merrimack run expanded into the fourth as it grew to 10-2 for the 41-35 deficit. Foreman halted the spurt with a steal and bucket for the 43-35 advantage. The Warriors dropped the score to two possessions, 45-39 with 3:45 left however, McCormack threw in a dagger three for the multiple possession lead.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
- Junior Lindsay Berger matched a personal-best with four blocks.
- Junior Grace Munt secured a career-high seven rebounds in the contest.
- The Crusaders are 4-2 over the last six games and teams are averaging 44.5 points per game on 31.8 percent (105-for-330) and 21.3 percent (23-for-108) from three-point land against Holy Cross.
- Holy Cross has started the year 5-0 at home for the first time since 2019-20.
