Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's ice hockey earns series split with win over Niagara

WORCESTER, Mass. – Men's ice hockey defeated Niagara, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center Rink to split the weekend series.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders (8-7-2, 4-7-2 Atlantic Hockey) got on the board first at the 7:19 mark of the first period on a one-timer by senior Alec Cicero. Freshman Jack Stockfish drew two defenders into a scrum along the boards, sneaking the puck out to senior Tyler Ghirardosi. Ghirardosi backhanded the puck to an open Cicero above the faceoff circle, where he rocketed a shot past the Niagara (6-8-1, 5-5-1 Atlantic Hockey) netminder.
  • Niagara knotted the game at one with 14:40 left in the second period.
  • Just over two minutes later, senior Jake Higgins regained the lead with what would eventually be the game-winning goal. Cicero touched a rebound off the Niagara netminders' pads to Stockfish, who sent the puck to an open Higgins at the top of the faceoff circle. Higgins hesitated, drawing the defender to him before unleashing a wrist shot through traffic into the opposite side of the net.
  • The Crusaders struck again before the end of the period, netting a power play goal with 3:58 remaining in the middle frame. Stockfish walked the puck into the zone, drawing three Niagara defenders before passing to an open sophomore Joe Solimine across the ice. Solimine sent the puck back across the ice to senior Matt Guerra, who sent an unopposed shot towards the net that snuck its way through the Niagara goaltender.
  • Holy Cross' final goal came at the 3:58 mark of the third period on an empty net goal by Guerra.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Grande recorded 26 saves in the win, while Niagara's Jarrett Fiske tallied 33 in the loss.
  • Niagara held the edge in faceoffs, taking 34 to Holy Cross' 29.
  • The Crusaders held the Purple Eagles to 0-for-4 on the power play tonight, and 0-for-6 over the course of the series.

UP NEXT:
  • The Crusaders will faceoff against UMass Lowell for a home-and-home series on Friday, Dec. 8 at 7:05 p.m. in Lowell, Mass. and Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. in Worcester.
