WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross women's basketball senior captain
Bronagh Power-Cassidy scored a season and game-high 24 points as the Crusaders rolled to a 65-41 victory Sunday against nonconference opponent Northeastern in the Hart Center Arena.
The win levels Crusaders mark at 5-5 while the Huskies fall to 4-5.
Power-Cassidy became the
36th member of the program's 1,000th point club burying a three-pointer on the right wing with 7:07 left in the game. Power-Cassidy was 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) shooting and added six rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block in 33 minutes of action. 15 of her 24 points came in the second half.
Senior
Cara McCormack joined her teammate in double-figures with 13 points knocking down three triples and handing out a game-high five assists.
Holy Cross held Northeastern to only 19 points in the second half outscoring them 39-to-19. The Huskies struggled shooting during the final 20 minutes going only 7-for-27 (25.9 percent) from the field. The Crusaders also used a game changing 26-2 outburst spanning 8:37 of the third and fourth quarters to take control of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Holy Cross held their first lead, 5-4 when junior Lindsay Berger took a Kaitlyn Flanagan feed for the mid-range jumper at the elbow. Northeastern knocked down a three at the buzzer to lead 12-7 through one.
- The Huskies built their lead to 16-11, however the Crusaders used a 12-0 run to push ahead by seven, 23-16. McCormack started the binge with seven straight points including a three off an inbounds play and Power-Cassidy upped it to 12-0 with a transition wing triple. The Huskies outscored the Crusaders 6-2 over the final 4:31 to trail 26-22 at the break.
- Holy Cross led 33-31 when Power-Cassidy drove baseline for the hoop and harm to expand the lead to 36-31 with 3:57 left in the third. The 11-0 run continued as senior Callie Wright drained a mid-range bucket for the 44-31 lead at the end of three.
- The Crusader run escalated to 26-2 into the fourth quarter as Power-Cassidy notched her 1,000th career-point with 7:11 to go.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
- The Crusaders are 13-4 (.765) when Flanagan records four or more assists.
- Power-Cassidy needs 13 more three-pointers for 142 which would crack the program's top-10.
- Holy Cross is 4-0 in the Hart Center Arena this year.
- The hosts outrebounded the guests by 15 (45-to-30).
- Over the last five games, the Crusaders have allowed only 44.8 points per game while holding opponents to 22.7 percent (20-for-88) three-point shooting while outrebounding foes 44.2-to-30.8.
- Freshman Janie Bachmann scored her first career points in the contest.
