WORCESTER, Mass. – Led by senior
Bronagh Power-Cassidy's game-high 20 points, the Holy Cross women's basketball team rallied from a 13 point first quarter deficit to defeat nonconference foe Brown 62-54 Thursday evening during their home opener in the Hart Center Arena.
The win is the first of the season for the Crusaders (1-1) while the loss sends the Bears to 0-2.
Power-Cassidy was efficient shooting the basketball in the showdown going 8-for-15 (53.3 percent) with four rebounds, two steals an assist and a block. 12 of her 20 markers came in the second half.
Junior
Lindsay Berger came off the bench for 17 minutes and had her first double-double of the season and sixth of her career with 13 points and a game-best 12 boards.
Senior
Cara McCormack chipped in 10 points, six rebounds, one off from a career-high and three assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Brown opened the scoring at the 7:12 mark with a second chance three then went out on the break for a deuce and hit one freebie for the 6-0 lead. Berger cleaned up a missed layup for the first Crusader points, however Brown drilled a three at the top of the point for the 9-2 edge. The Brown run continued with another triple making it 12-2. The guests led by 12 before Holy Cross cut it to 11, 19-8 at the end of one.
- Holy Cross outscored brown 10-2 to start the second quarter with a key play being a Power-Cassidy save at half court to sophomore Kaitlyn Flanagan who led the break and found an open junior Grace Munt bringing the Crusader within three 21-18. Holy Cross took their first lead with 29 seconds left, 26-25 thanks to a Power-Cassidy layup.
- At the 5:09 mark, Brown took a two possession lead 36-32 following two freebies. Flanagan found Power-Cassidy on an inbounds play and she slashed through the left side for a deuce making it 36-34 Brown. McCormack drained a step back mid-range jumper for the four point, 40-36 lead through three periods.
- Munt fed Flanagan on the right wing for a catch and shoot three for the 43-38 lead. A pair of free throws from McCormack built a 47-41 margin with 5:53 left. McCormack connected on a three-ball to open a seven point lead. Berger upped the advantage to nine, 56-47 with 2:10 to go driving from the top of the key into the post for the hoop and harm.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
- Holy Cross started the game 1-for-14 (7.1 percent) from the field over the opening 6:36 of the game.
- Brown was 2-for-13 (15.4 percent) from the hardwood in the second quarter.
- Power-Cassidy scored 10 of the Crusaders' 14 points in the third stanza.
- The 13 point comeback victory tied for the longest in the Maureen Magarity era (Jan. 11, 2023 vs. Lehigh)
- Holy Cross outscored Brown 38-to-28 in the paint.
