WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross women's basketball senior
Janelle Allen scored a game-high 20 points and secured 10 rebounds as the Crusaders picked up a 51-41 victory versus nonconference opponent UMass-Lowell Monday evening in the Hart Center Arena.
The win sends the Crusaders to 2-1 early on while the River Hawks slide to 0-3.
Allen's double-double was the third of her career and the 20 markers and 10 boards matched personal-highs. Allen made 57.1 percent (8-for-14) of her shot attempts and came away with a steal and a block.
Classmate
Cara McCormack added 13 points, four assists and a block. Fellow team captain
Bronagh Power-Cassidy struggled shooting the rock, but found other ways to contribute matching Allen's 10 caroms and handing out a career-best matching five assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Holy Cross began the contest on a 14-2 run to build a 12 point lead thanks to an Allen post score. The guests came within six, but junior Lindsay Berger cashed in two from the charity stripe to build up an eight point, 18-10 end of first edge.
- Sophomore Kaitlyn Flanagan found Berger underneath to expand the margin to 27-14 with 4:37 left before the break. McCormack converted a driving layup before the horn sounded for the 31-17 halftime lead.
- Sophomore Simone Foreman pulled up and buried a triple on the right wing in the third quarter to give the Crusaders their biggest lead of the game at 35-18. Holy Cross led 40-28 after three periods.
- A 13-4 River Hawk run make it a two possession game with 1:52 remaining. Both teams had possessions and could do nothing with it until Flanagan was fouled with 40 seconds left. She upped the margin to six as the Crusaders did not look back.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
- Allen scored 13 of her 20 points in the first half.
- The Crusaders shot 50 percent (14-for-28) from the hardwood in the first half and 19.2 percent (5-for-26) in the second half.
- The hosts had 15 assists on 19 made baskets.
- The Crusaders dominated the paint outscoring (36-to-16) and outrebounding (50-to-36) their counterparts.
- McCormack recorded the fifth block of her career.
- Holy Cross never trailed in the contest.
- Head coach Maureen Magarity needs one more win for 200 in her career.
