Women’s basketball starts season with loss to BC

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Holy Cross women's basketball guards Bronagh Power-Cassidy and Simone Foreman tallied the first double-doubles of their careers as the Crusaders began their 2023-24 season with a 66-61 loss to nonconference foe Boston College Monday night in Conte Forum.

Power-Cassidy scored a team-best 16 points and had a contest-best 12 rebounds which was a new personal-high.

Foreman, who made her first collegiate start, easily bested her previous career-high rebound mark of seven set five times during her freshman season. She finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • BC used pressure after a make which led to a jumper for the early 4-0 lead. Power-Cassidy countered on the next Crusader possession canning shot from just inside the arc. The Crusaders trailed 8-6 and got seven straight points including a sophomore Kaitlyn Flanagan three and fast break layup for the 13-8 lead which forced BC into a timeout. Holy Cross led 15-10 and went on a cold spell going the final 5:23 of the period without the field goal leading 15-12 though one.
  • Senior Cara McCormack and Power-Cassidy opened up a six point lead for the Crusaders at 20-14. BC responded with a 10-0 burst to move ahead 22-20. Foreman stopped the run canning a wing three-pointer with 6:23 left before the half. Foreman's three was the start of an 11-2 Crusader run as they closed the half ahead 31-26.
  • Senior Janelle Allen opened up the second half scoring securing an offensive rebound and putting it back for two. Flanagan drove the lane and kicked out a pass to Power-Cassidy in the corner for three making it 36-28. BC went on a 13-4 stretch to drop the margin to 42-41. BC was trailing by one and junior Lindsay Berger made a massive cleanup on the offensive glass for the hoop and harm with seconds remaining giving the Crusaders a 49-45 lead after three.
  • The hosts began the final stanza on an 8-0 run to regain the edge for the first time since the 7:24 mark in the first quarter. A McCormack three-pointer pulled the Crusaders within one. A second chance bucket with 1:16 left moved BC in front 62-58. Power-Cassidy drilled a pull up triple with 58 seconds left. Holy Cross had an opportunity to take the lead, but missed their chance and BC clinched the game with free throws.
