Volleyball downed by American Friday night

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Holy Cross volleyball team fell by a 3-0 score to Patriot League foe American Friday evening in Bender Arena.

The setback was 19th overall on the year for the Crusaders and 13th in league play. The Eagles improve to 17-9, 10-4 PL with the victory.

SET SCORES:
  • Eagles 3, Crusaders 0 (20-25, 20-25, 16-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior Abbie Lane put the Crusaders ahead 4-3 smacking the ball from the right side. An American attack miscue put the Crusaders down one, 10-9. American used a 5-1 burst to the media timeout to lead 15-10. Sophomore Gracie Reisman and senior Sanaea Simmons skied up for a block keeping it a five point deficit at 17-12. American captured the first set 25-20.
  • The second set saw the Crusaders lead 4-1 following a sophomore Madison Bailey ace. American came within two, 10-8 before the Crusaders used a 4-1 spurt to build a 14-9 lead thanks to two Reisman kills and a sophomore Rachel Johnson ace. A freshman Emma Halstead ace pushed the Crusader lead to 17-12. The Eagles clawed back using seven straight points to regain the lead, a lead they would not relinquish.
  • Reisman doubled up the Eagles early from the right pin putting the Crusaders ahead 6-3. American trimmed the margin to one before three straight moved the Crusaders ahead 10-6. Eight in a row from the hosts put them in the lead 14-10. Lane and junior Sarah Stokes tallied points, but American notched four straight to take control of the set at 21-13.
INSIDE THE BOX:
  • Madison Bailey started at libero and recorded a career-best 13 digs, which was a team-high.
  • Junior Rian Millership and Simmons had three blocks each.
UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross ends their road schedule on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Navy.
  • First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
