Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's ice hockey downed by Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Men's ice hockey fell to Canisius, 5-3, in Atlantic Hockey action Friday night at the LECOM Harborcenter.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Canisius got on the board first, scoring at the 15:36 mark of the first period.
  • Freshman Ty Gagno recorded his second goal of the season 5:55 into the second period to tie the game at one all. Junior John Gelatt shot the puck wide of the net, finding junior Liam McLinskey behind the cage. McLinskey made a quick backhand pass to Gagno streaking down the middle of the ice, who was able to shoot the puck past the Golden Griffins goalkeeper.
  • The tie did not last long as Canisius scored two goals, at the 6:35 and 15:50 marks of the period, to extend the lead to 3-1.
  • Canisius picked up their fourth goal of the game, a power play strike, at the 10:17 mark of the third period.
  • The Crusaders answered with a power play goal of their own under three minutes later to cut the lead to 4-2. Junior Matt Shatsky passed the puck up from the corner, finding junior Michael Hodge at the blue line. Hodge passed the puck across to senior Alec Cicero, who unleashed a one-timer from the left faceoff dot, sneaking the puck into the back of the net.
  • Holy Cross pulled senior netminder Jason Grande in exchange for an extra skater with 2:41 left in the period. Senior Tyler Ghirardosi dug the puck out of a scrum along the boards, finding senior Jack Ricketts' stick. Ricketts drew the defense, finding an open McLinskey driving the net, who tipped the puck into the back of the cage to bring the score to 4-3.
  • That was the closest the Crusaders would get, as the Golden Griffins found the empty net with 13 seconds remaining.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • The Crusaders held the Golden Griffins to 1-for-4 on the power play.
  • Grande recorded 28 saves in the matchup, marking his fourth game this season with over 25 saves.
  • Senior Matt Guerra skated in his 100th collegiate game on Friday night. Guerra made his collegiate debut against Canisius on Nov. 28, 2020, while he was at Robert Morris.

UP NEXT:
  • The two teams will take the ice again tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m.
