Men's ice hockey defeats Canisius in shootout fashion

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Men's ice hockey tied Canisius, 3-3, before winning in a shootout Saturday night in Atlantic Hockey action at the LECOM Harborcenter.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross held the edge in shots, 15-8, in the first period, though neither team was able to score.
  • Canisius got on the board first, scoring at the 3:10 mark of the second period.
  • Senior Alec Cicero tied the game just under ten minutes later with a four-on-four goal. Senior Tyler Ghirardosi won the offensive zone faceoff back to sophomore Mack Oliphant, who sent a wrist shot on net that was saved by the Canisius netminder. Cicero picked up the rebound, pulled the puck around the goaltender, sending the puck into the back of the net for the goal.
  • The tie did not last long, as Canisius found the back of the net 30 seconds later.
  • Senior Jack Ricketts found the back of the net at the 16:12 mark of the second period to give the Crusaders the 3-2 lead going into the second intermission. Senior Jack Robilotti picked up his first assist of the season, digging the puck out of a scrum along the boards before finding freshman Ty Gagno. Gagno lifted the puck ahead, feeding Ricketts in stride for the one-on-one chance, which he lifted over the shoulder of the goaltender.
  • Canisius tied the game with a power play goal at the 11:15 mark of the third period to force the overtime period.
  • The Crusaders outshot the Golden Griffins 5-2 in overtime, though neither team was able to score.
  • Seniors Lucas Thorne and Matt Guerra scored in the shootout, while junior Thomas Gale stopped both Canisius attempts to earn the extra Atlantic Hockey point.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Gale recorded 27 saves in his season debut.
  • Senior Jack Ricketts extended his points streak to nine games with his goal and assist.
  • Cicero skated in his 100th collegiate game. Cicero made his collegiate debut against LIU on Nov. 22, 2020.

UP NEXT:
  • The Crusaders will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 9, and Friday, Nov. 10, when they take on AIC in a home-and-home set.
