Thomas Winand Greene passed away on October 19, 2023, at the age of 86 in his hometown, Baltimore, Maryland. Though born in Washington, D.C. to parents Michael and Katherine Greene, Tom spent most of his childhood on Church Lane in Pikesville, Maryland. Tom's maternal grandfather owned the old Pikesville Rye Distillery, and Tom grew up in his grandfather's house with his mother, two maiden aunts and three brothers.
Tom graduated from Loyola-Blakefield High School in 1955. At Loyola, he lettered and was captain of three varsity sports. His talents on the football field were exceptional earning Tom a four-year athletic scholarship to the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he flourished and was later inducted into both the Holy Cross Athletic Hall of Fame and the college's Ring of Honor. As a sophomore, Tom won the O'Melia Award after leading Holy Cross to a 7-0 victory over Boston College. He also won the Frazier Trophy twice, as the outstanding player in two straight wins over Syracuse. Tom was among the nation's leaders in total offense for three years and was on the cover of the 1958 NCAA guide, the first player in the East to have that honor. Tom rarely left the field in a college football game without serving as quarterback, safety, punter and kicker. Tom was also named to the All-New England team in lacrosse and played in the North-South game helping the Crusaders to a 7-3 record in 1958, the first-year lacrosse was recognized as a varsity sport at Holy Cross. In recognition of his many honors and achievements, Baltimore's Mayor awarded Tom Greene a key to the City of Baltimore in 1958.
After college, Tom was drafted by the then Boston Patriots of the newly formed American Football League becoming the franchise's first starting quarterback. His professional career included stops with the Dallas Texans and the San Diego Chargers.
Tom served in the National Guard's 175th Infantry Division, where he completed his OCS training and remained on active duty in the Guard through the Vietnam War as a 2nd Lieutenant.
Tom enjoyed a long and successful career in commercial real estate leasing and sales working for the Rouse Company, W. C. Pinkard & Co., Dickinson-Hefner, Inc., and KLNB. Colleagues recall that he always supported and mentored younger brokers, and maintained an absolute commitment to honesty and integrity in all that he undertook.
Tom's prowess on the football field was uniquely contrasted with his lifelong passions for bird watching, bird hunting, trout fishing and gardening. He was an outdoorsman in every sense of the word. Tom had no problem hanging up his cleats and helmet for his LL Bean boots, khaki pants, work gloves and gardening tools. He remained active well into his 80s and enjoyed spending entire days working outdoors planting trees, mowing grass and gardening. He was an avid reader and had a keen interest in Civil War history.
Tom was a member of the Maryland Club for more than forty years where he regularly played squash. He was also a longtime member of the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club where he played golf and served as a member of the Board of Governors.
Tom tutored middle school boys studying Latin at St. Ignatius Loyola Academy and volunteered at Ladew Gardens in his retirement.
One of Tom's lifelong friends, Stuart Christhilf, commented:
"Tom Greene was first and foremost a really, really good person: Good husband, father, brother and friend. He was also a great athlete, playing quarterback at Loyola High School, Holy Cross, and then for the New England Patriots. Tom and I enjoyed fly-fishing and walking the streets of Baltimore talking Civil War history. Later, I followed his lead by volunteering at St. Ignatius Loyola Academy tutoring at-risk middle school kids, where they admired and loved him."
Always eager to greet everyone whom he encountered with a warm smile and a kind word, Tom Greene rarely met a stranger.
Tom is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Joseph Rodgers Greene, his children, Nelly Greene Perkins (Drew) and Peter Greene (Anne), as well as a nephew, Duncan Greene, whom he raised as a son. He is also survived by four grandchildren Giles Perkins, Henry Perkins, Marylin Greene and Allison Greene, and a brother, John Greene (Gael), and many nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his brothers, Michael Greene, and Francis Greene.
