Holy Cross host Assumption for midweek non-conference game

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team will host Assumption for the second game of the non-conference series on Tuesday Nov. 28 for Family Night. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Hart Center Rink. Fans can watch the broadcast on the ESPN+.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (4-8-2, 2-4-2 Hockey East):

  • The Crusaders took a 5-1 win over Assumption in the first game of the two-game set before the Thanksgiving break.
  • A slow start in the first period of the game was answered with a goal by junior forward Mackenzie King. Two great passes from junior defenseman Emilie Fortunato and junior forward Madison Michals found King in the perfect spot for a quick snipe into the top right corner of the net to end the period.
  • The second period got off to a hot start with senior forward Millie Sirum sneaking one past the Greyhounds goalie just 55 seconds into play. She was assisted by sophomore forward Alexia Moreau. Less than two minutes later and senior forward Lilly Feeney found the back of the net off a series of passes from Fortunato to King to feed Feeney for the finish. The Crusaders furthered their lead to 4-0 before the second period ended this time with Moreau scoring and Sirum and senior defenseman Grace Johnson with the assists.
  • In the third period, senior forward Bryn Saarela snuck the puck in during a scramble in front of the net on a power-play opportunity and was assisted by freshman forward Reghan Chadwick and sophomore forward Charlotte Sonntag. The Crusaders fifth goal of the competition came from number five in her 100th career game, a big milestone for the senior. Assumption managed to get one goal in before time expired ending the competition with a 5-1 victory for Holy Cross.
  • Both senior goalie Madison Beck and sophomore goalie Abby Hornung were between the pipes with Hornung making her season debut. Beck made a total of 17 saves in the first two periods and Hornung finished out the game making eight saves in the third only conceding one goal.
  • Holy Cross's leading scorer is Sirum who has netted six goals this season. Sophomore defenseman Casey Borgiel continues to lead the Crusaders in assists with nine while Moreau has the most points of any Holy Cross skater with 13 so far this year. Junior defensemen Fortunato, Carmen Elliott and Emma Min have the most blocks for the Crusaders with Fortunato racking up 22, closely followed by Elliott and Min who have 20 each.

GAGING THE GREYHOUNDS (4-10-1, 4-5-1 Northeast-10):

  • Assumption got off to a rocky start to begin their season losing three games in a row, then tying and dropping another before picking up their first win over Post. They hit another dry spell losing four more in a row and have recently turned things around winning three of their last three games. The Greyhounds hit a three game win streak earning victories over Saint Michael's in a two game series on Nov. 10-11 and this past Saturday Nov. 18 in a single game against Post where they took a swift 3-0 victory. Most recently Assumption fell to Holy Cross 5-1 on Nov. 21 and RPI 6-1 on Nov. 25.
  • Their most recent games, Assumption dropped a home game to inter-city opponent's Holy Cross 5-1. The Greyhounds long goal was scored by freshman forward Ava McGaffigan on a power-play opportunity in the third period. She was assisted by freshman forward Jenna Chaplain.
  • In the Greyhounds game at RPI, the only goal of the night for Assumption was netted by junior forward Sheridan Terrazzano in the second period on a power-play goal. She was assisted by junior forward Kiersten Browning. RPI took home the 6-1 win.
  • Assumption's goalie for the Holy Cross competition was freshman Jadyn Weiser who has only appeared in three other games this season. In the net she had a total of 45 saves on the night, a season and career high.
  • In the RPI game junior goalie Carissa Mudrak and freshman goalie Katelyn Michals each had a turn between the pipes of the Greyhounds. Mudrak, Assumption's typical go-to in the net, made 26 saves on the outing in the first two periods of play. Michals who only has appeared in two games this season made five saves in the third period for the Greyhounds to close out the competition. Murdrak leads the goaltenders with a 3.17 goals against average  and a .908 save percentage this year.
  • Terrazzano is the Greyhounds leading scorer with six goals and has the most points of any of Assumption's skaters with nine. Chaplain has the most assists of the Greyhounds with five assists a piece this season. Johnson leads the Greyhounds in blocks with 29 so far.

LAST TIME THEY MET:

  • Holy Cross has the 1-0 all-time win record over Assumption heading into their second matchup in the two programs' histories.
