STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team trailed by as many as 21 points and pulled within two possessions in the fourth quarter, but was defeated 68-55 by nonconference and Collegeinsider.com Mid-Major no. 22 Stony Brook Sunday afternoon in the Island Federal Arena.
The setback levels the Crusaders record at 2-2 while the Seawolves remain unblemished at 4-0.
Senior
Janelle Allen scored a team-high 17 points and was 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) shooting with six boards two steals and a block. Classmate
Cara McCormack made her homecoming to Long Island and notched 11 points, four rebounds and a game-high matching three steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Senior Bronagh Power-Cassidy found junior Lindsay Berger on the left block for two which was the Crusader first basket. Stony Brook drained back-to-back triples for the 10-2 edge. Stony Brook led 24-5 through 10 minutes.
- Trailing by 20, the Crusaders strung together six straight, an Allen free throw, an Allen post score and a Power-Cassidy triple to trim the deficit to 27-13. Stony Brook outscored Holy Cross 12-9 over the final 6:33 of the half.
- McCormack began the third cashing in a three. Coming out of the media timeout, Berger found Allen for a deuce cutting the deficit to 14, 45-31. Allen converted a layup to make it a 10 point game with 1:45 left in the third. The Crusaders outscored the Seawolves 19-13 in the third period to trail 52-41 through 30 minutes.
- McCormack connected on a three-ball making it a two possession game 52-46 with 8:31 left. Holy Cross came within six again, but Stony Brook closed out the game.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
- Sophomore Simone Foreman established a new career-high with a game-best 13 rebounds.
- Sophomore Kaitlyn Flanagan handed out a contest-best six assists.
- After shooting 51.7 percent (15-of-29) and 50.0 percent (6-of-12) from deep in the first half, Stony Brook shot only 23.5 percent (8-for-34) from the field and 9.1 percent (1-for-11) from range in the second half.
- Head coach Maureen Magarity needs one more win for 200 in her career.
