Men's ice hockey to face LIU in season opener

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team will open the regular season against Long Island University on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. The matchup will stream on FloHockey.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (0-0-0, 0-0-0 AHA):
  • The 2022-23 AHA Championship runner-up Holy Cross Crusaders return 19 players, while adding six freshmen and two transfers to the fold.
  • Senior Jack Ricketts will serve as the team's lone captain this season, with seniors Tyler Ghirardosi, Jack Robilotti, and Jake Higgins serving as assistant captains.
  • The Crusaders return their All-AHA Second Team pick in Jack Ricketts, AHA All-Rookie Team selection Mack Oliphant, AHA All-Tournament Team picks Liam McLinskey and Jack Robilotti, and seven of their top-10 point scorers from last season.
  • Ricketts was also named to the 2023-24 All-AHA Preseason Team after recording 16 goals and 16 assists last season. Ricketts received votes for AHA Preseason Player of the Year as well. Senior goalkeeper Jason Grande and junior forward Liam McLinskey received votes for the Preseason Team.
  • Despite appearing in the AHA Championship Game for the first time since 2006, the Crusaders were picked fourth in the AHA Preseason Coaches' Poll, receiving one first-place vote. RIT was picked to finish first, followed by Sacred Heart and AIC.
 
SCOUTING LIU (0-0-0):
  • The Sharks return 19 players, while adding six freshmen and six transfers.
  • Despite going 13-22-1 last season, the Sharks set a new program record for wins, and recorded their first win over a ranked team (#12 Ohio State, 3-2).
  • The Sharks shared one common opponent with the Crusaders last season. Both teams faced reigning National Champion Quinnipiac, with the Sharks tying the Bobcats, 2-2, in October, and falling to the Bobcats, 5-2, in January. The Crusaders lost to the Bobcats 4-1 in late December.
  • LIU opened their season on Saturday night, falling to #16Penn State on a late power play goal, 3-2. Preston Brodziak and Riley Wallack potted the Sharks two goals, with Jack Quinn recording both assists.
  • 2022-23 Crusaders captain Grayson Constable will return to the Hart Center as a member of the LIU Sharks. Constable skated in 119 games for Holy Cross, tallying 14 goals and 12 assists. Constable was named an assistant captain for the Sharks this season.
 
LAST TIME THEY MET:
  • The two teams faced off in LIU's opening series as a Division I program in the 2020-21 season.
  • The teams split the series, with LIU taking game one 3-2 in overtime, and the Crusaders winning 5-2 on the second day.
