Volleyball falls to Colgate

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross volleyball sophomore Gracie Reisman hit .429 with a contest-best 12 kills as the Crusaders fell by a 3-0 margin to Patriot League opponent Colgate Friday evening in Coach George Blaney '61 Gymnasium.

The setback was the 17th overall for the Crusaders and 11th in league play while the Raiders improved to 17-6, 10-2 PL.

Resiman established a new season-best in kills in the match. Junior Abbie Lane joined her teammate in double digits with 11 kills to go with seven digs. Senior Halle Carter double-doubled for the second time this season with a team-high 21 assists and 10 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Reisman tipped the ball over two blockers for the kill to make it 4-2 Crusaders. Sophomore setter Katie Russell expanded the lead to 7-3 placing an ace. Sophomore Rachel Johnson powered a kill through the block to double up Colgate 10-5. Holy Cross moved ahead 13-7 thanks to a Lane kill resulting in a Colgate timeout. The Raiders responded with three aces and a long rally to come within two, 13-11. Their scoring stretch reached 8-0 to jump ahead 15-13. Colgate led 22-15 until the Crusaders notched five in a row to trail 22-20. The Raiders won the set 25-20.
  • Colgate led 5-3 in the early stages of the second set. Johnson powered a ball on the left side while junior Rian Millership and Reisman skied up for a block to level the set 9-9. The guests used a 6-2 mini burst to lead 15-11 at the media stoppage. Colgate got a solo block to increase their edge to 18-12. The Crusaders traded points with the Raiders before Colgate took a 2-0 match lead.
  • Lane produced her 10th kill of the match in the third set making it 4-3 Colgate. A freshman Emma Halstead kill, a Colgate miscue and a Reisman kill gave the Crusaders their first lead at 8-7. Another Resiman kill opened up a 10-8 Crusader edge. The guests regained the margin 15-12 at the media timeout. Resiman continued her strong set with another mash making it 19-17. Another kill off Reismans' swing kept the Crusaders down two, 23-21 late. Colgate cinched the match on a service error.
INSIDE THE BOX:
  • Carter double-doubled for the 27th time in her career and 20th time as a member of the Crusaders.
  • Halstead hit a career-high .625 with a personal-best five kills to go with eight digs.
  • Reisman recorded seven of her 12 kills in the third set hitting .455 during the third stanza.
  • Johnson only played two sets, but recorded nine kills while hitting .286.
  • Lane manufactured her 600th career kill in the match.
