A record-setting showing by senior quarterback
Matthew Sluka of the Holy Cross football team earned him FedEx Ground FCS National Offensive Player of the Week honors, as announced
by Stats Perform on Monday, Oct. 23.
Sluka set a Division I single-game record for rushing yards by a quarterback, with 330 yards on the ground in a setback against Lafayette on Saturday, Oct. 21 – more rushing yards ever recorded than any FBS or FCS quarterback. He ran for three touchdowns, while also passing for one more.
The 330-yard showing marked the second-most rushing yards ever by a Crusader, just seven yards behind Gill Fenerty's 337-yard game against Columbia in 1983.
In Saturday's game, Sluka surpassed the 3,000 rushing yard-mark in his career, with 3,233; he now ranks third in program history in that category. Sluka also moves into a tie with teammate
Jordan Fuller for career rushing touchdowns for second in program history; Fuller and Sluka each have 36 touchdown rushes in their careers.
Sluka is the second Crusader to earn National Offensive Player of the Week accolades this season, as Fuller previously won the award after a Week 1 win vs. Merrimack. Â
Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 28 with a road Patriot League matchup against Fordham. Kickoff in The Bronx, N.Y. is set for 1 p.m.
