Holy Cross faces off with Boston College for conference opener

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team will host Boston College for game one of two on Friday, Oct. 20 for the conference opener. The Crusaders will then head to the city for game two at BC on Saturday Oct. 21. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. at Hart Center Rink at Luth Athletic Complex and 2 p.m. at Conte Forum. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+. 

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (1-3-0, 0-0-0 Hockey East): 

  • The Crusaders split their two game set against Brown this past weekend with two more overtime games. Holy Cross fell in game one at Brown 3-2 in overtime but came back the next day to take a 2-1 OT win for their first victory of the season.
  • Sophomore forward Alexia Moreau got the Crusaders on the board to cut the Bears lead in half at 18:15 in game one.
  • Sophomore forward Lane Lewis and sophomore defenseman Casey Borgiel assisted Moreau on her game with Borgiel earning her first assist of the season. 
  • Holy Cross sophomore forward Alexis Perry stepped up and scored back-to-back goals in the last three minutes of the third period to tie the score 3-3. These were her first two collegiate goals.
  • Freshman forward Reghan Chadwick and Borgiel assisted Perry on her first goal at 17:33 which was Chadwicks first career assist. Borgiel assisted once again on Perry's second goal to tally three assists in one game, a career high. The Crusaders dropped the game with the Bears netting the game winner just 28 seconds into overtime.
  • Senior forward Millie Sirum was the hero of game two scoring the equalizing goal at home in the third period at 18:17. This sent the competition into the teams fourth straight overtime game. Sirum struck again burying the game winner at 2:40 to give the Crusaders their first win of the season.
  • Sirum currently leads the team in goals with three so far this season. Due to her efforts on the weekend, Sirum was named the Hilton Garden Inn Crusader of the Week.
  • Moreau and Borgiel lead the Crusaders in assists with four each. Moreau tallied two more in game two of the Brown series and also leads the team in points with five. Borgiel managed three assists in game one with the Bears.
  • Junior defensemen Emilie Fortunato and Carmen Elliott are tied with seven blocks each to lead the Crusaders.
  • Senior goalie Madison Beck earned her first win on the year in game two against Brown. She made 23 saves to 52 shots faced. She conceded only one goal in the game. She now has a 1.91 goals against average and a .926 save percentage.

EYES ON THE EAGLES (2-4-0, 2-0-0 Hockey East):

  • Boston College concluded the 2022-23 season with a 20-15-1 overall record and 16-11-0 conference record. The Eagles finished in 4th place in the Hockey East and made it to the quarterfinals of the Hockey East Tournament to fall to Northeastern 3-0.
  • The Eagles opened their season at Clark on Sept. 29-30 dropping both games and falling in their second series at Wisconsin on Oct. 5-6 for four straight losses. Boston College had their conference opener this past weekend on Oct. 13-14 taking on No. 15 UConn where they took both wins. The Eagles defeated the Huskies 4-3 in overtime in game one and took game two 2-1 for an undefeated Hockey East record.
  • The Huskies took an early lead scoring just five minutes into play and again three minutes later in the first period. The Eagles played with a two goal deficit until the third period when they scored three consecutive goals to take the 3-2 lead. UConn tied things up 3-3 midway through the period to send the game to overtime. The Eagles sophomore forward Abby Newhook scored the game winner in the final minute of overtime play to give Boston College its first win of the season.
  • Boston College traveled to UConn for game two and the Huskies once again kicked off the game netting a goal at 12:18 for the 1-0 lead. The Eagles responded and scored back-to-back power play goals in the second period by freshman forward Julia Pellerin and junior forward Katie Pyne. The Eagles swept the series to take down the nationally ranked Huskies.
  • Freshman goalie Grace Campbell was in goal for both games and made 33 saves in game one and 27 saves in game two. Campbell now has a 3.84 goals against average and a .899 save percentage
  • Pellerin was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week and sophomore goalie Campbell was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week due to their efforts on the ice against UConn.
  • Pellerin, Newhook and Pyne are all tied with three goals apiece for the Eagles. Pellerin, senior forward Gaby Roy and graduate forward Sammy Smigliani all have three assists on the season so far to lead Boston College. Pellerin leads the team with the most points so far with six. 
  • Sophomore defenseman Caitlin Flynn leads the Eagles in blocks with 10.

LAST TIME THEY MET:

  • Holy Cross and Boston College met last year with the Crusaders last hosting the Eagles for their final match up of the season. Boston College took a swift 3-0 win over Holy Cross to add to the Eagles 14 game win streak.
  • Holy Cross holds a 0-14-0 all-time series record against Boston College.
