Holy Cross edged by Army West Point

WORCESTER, Mass. – Army West Point sophomore forward Gage Guerra tallied two goals and an assist to lead the Black Knights to a 3-2 victory over the Holy Cross men's soccer team at Linda Johnson Smith Stadium. The Crusaders fall to 4-5-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the Patriot League, while Army improves to 4-2-2 on the season and 2-0-0 in the conference.

Holy Cross opened the scoring in the 35th minute on a goal by sophomore forward Evan Jones. Following a corner kick by senior midfielder Matt McGonigle, sophomore defender Marcus Williams played the ball to sophomore midfielder Jon Klein, who redirected it towards the net where Jones knocked it home.

Army came back in the 58th minute to tie up the game at 1-1, when Guerra used the back of his heel to put in a Cooper Warren corner kick. The Black Knights then pulled in front in the 62nd minute, when Jack Meyer knocked in a rebound after a free kick by Guerra was saved. Army added its third goal in the 67th minute on a direct free kick by Guerra from 24 yards out at the top of the box.

The Crusaders responded in the 77th minute to cut the margin to 3-2 on a goal by Williams. Senior defender Taj Salawu headed a McGonigle corner kick towards the net, where Williams chipped it over the goalkeeper from four yards out. But Holy Cross was unable to score again, as the Black Knights held on for the win.

The Crusaders finished the game with a 22-7 advantage in shots and a 10-6 edge in corner kicks.

Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 28, when it travels to Colgate for a 7:00 p.m. game.
