Holy Cross takes down Hartford 4-2

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Jon Klein tallied a goal and an assist as the Holy Cross men's soccer team posted a 4-2 victory over Hartford at Linda Johnson Smith Stadium. The Crusaders improve to 3-3 on the year with the win, while the Hawks fall to 0-6 overall.

After a scoreless first half, Holy Cross put a goal on the board in the 51st minute when Klein took a pass from senior forward Dylan Scanley in the left side of the box and scored from 10 yards out. Less than five minutes later, senior midfielder Jack Ostrosky found the net from 14 yards out in the center of the box to put the Crusaders up 2-0.

Hartford responded in the 67th minute, when Demario Cameron scored on a penalty kick following a foul in the box. Then in the 72 nd minute, Nicholas Castrovinci found the net from 10 yards out to tie the game at 2-2.

Holy Cross came back with what proved to be the game-winning goal when senior forward Matt McGonigle scored from eight yards out in the right side of the box. Senior midfielder Bergin Kranz took a long pass from Scanley in the left corner, then crossed the ball to McGonigle for the goal. In the 89th minute, freshman forward Ethan Gill added an insurance goal to put the game away.

The Crusaders dominated play for most the night, holding a 32-3 advantage in shots and an 18-1 edge in corner kicks.

Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, when it travels to Lafayette for its Patriot League opener at 6:00 p.m. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• Klein now has two goals and three assists in the Crusaders' last three games.
• Scanley set a new career high with two assists.
• Gill's goal was the first of his collegiate career.
• Holy Cross has now won three straight games, its longest streak since posting three straight victories from Sept. 1-7, 2021.
