Ostrosky scores twice, Crusaders down Iona for second straight win

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior midfielder Jack Ostrosky scored a pair of goals to lead the Holy Cross men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Iona at Linda Johnson Smith Stadium. The Crusaders improve to 2-3 on the year with the win, while the Gaels fall to 1-3 overall.

Iona opened the scoring in the 20th minute, when Camil Azzam Ruiz took a pass just outside the top of the penalty box and dribbled toward the left post before finding the net from eight yards out.

Holy Cross responded in the 31st minute on Ostroksy's first goal of the afternoon. Senior defender Taj Salawu played the ball to senior midfielder Matt McGonigle on the right wing, then McGonigle dribbled towards the box before crossing the ball to Ostrosky, who scored from 10 yards out.

The score remained tied at 1-1 until the 78th minute, when Ostrosky scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. McGonigle played a free kick from just outside the box on the right side to Salawu, who redirected the ball to sophomore defender Marcus Williams in front of the goal. Williams' shot was saved, but Ostrosky was there to knock the rebound into the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Josh Tubbs picked up his second straight victory, making three saves. Juan Affaro Monge recorded four saves for the Gaels.

Holy Cross finished the day with a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 14, when they play host to Hartford at 6:00 p.m.
