Baseball splits doubleheader vs. Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. — The Holy Cross baseball team split a Patriot League doubleheader with Lafayette on Saturday, April 23.

GAME ONE:
Holy Cross 6, Lafayette 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders loaded up the bases in the top of the second after senior first baseman Nate Wolf and senior catcher Angelo D'Acunto singled and freshman second baseman Connor Peek reached on an error. Sophomore right fielder Jake McElroy hit a bases-clearing double to put Holy Cross ahead early by a score of 3-0.
  • Dylan Minghini led off the bottom of the second with a home run to cut into the Crusader advantage.
  • Freshman designated hitter Sean Scanlon walked to lead off the third, and went around to third after a groundout and a single by Wolf. Sophomore shortstop Sam Kirkpatrick's sac fly scored Scanlon and extended the lead to 4-1.
  • The Leopards scored on an error to make it a 4-2 game in the bottom of the third.
  • Holy Cross tacked on a few insurance runs in the fifth, after freshman center fielder Connor Cooney scored on a fielder's choice, and in the sixth, after sophomore left fielder Patrick Casserly stole home.
  • The Crusaders escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth; in the bottom of the seventh, junior right-hander Luke Fox struck out a pair of batters and worked around a two-out single to keep the Leopards off the board.

GAME TWO:
Lafayette 1, Holy Cross 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross and Lafayette played to a scoreless tie through 8.5 innings, paced by six shutout innings and five strikeouts by junior right-hander Nate Chudy and 2.1 hitless innings from Fox.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Justin Grech hit a one-out single to score the lone run of the game and earn the win for the Leopards.

DUE UP:

  • The Crusaders and Leopards round out the weekend slate with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday, April 24.
