Baseball opens Patriot League action with doubleheader split at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Holy Cross baseball team opened Patriot League play with a doubleheader split against Navy on Saturday, March 26.

After the Midshipmen hit a sixth-inning grand slam in the opening game to stymie a Holy Cross rally and earn a win, the Crusaders broke a 3-3 deadlock in Game 2 after freshman right fielder Connor Cooney hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth, and used a six-run ninth to secure the victory.

GAME ONE:
Navy 9, Holy Cross 5 (seven innings)

STATS LEADERS:
Holy Cross:
Wang (2-for-3, double, home run, two runs scored, two RBI)
Scanlon (1-for-3, home run, two RBI)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Navy had a two-out RBI single and an inside-the-park grand slam to score five unearned runs in the bottom of the third, giving the Midshipmen a 5-0 lead.
  • The Crusaders began to rally back in the fourth inning, with freshman third baseman Nick Wang hitting a one-out solo homer. After back-to-back singles from senior first baseman Nate Wolf and sophomore second baseman Sam Kirkpatrick, sophomore right fielder Jake McElroy singled through the left side to score Wolf and bring Holy Cross within 5-2.
  • With two outs in the fifth, Holy Cross continued to chip away, with freshman left fielder Brendan Jones hitting a triple and then scoring on a double by Wang to bring the Crusaders within 5-3. Freshman designated hitter Sean Scanlon then hit a two-run homer to knot things up.
  • Navy loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth and Logan Keller delivered a grand slam to secure a 9-5 win for the Midshipmen.
