Baseball rolls past UMass

AMHERST, Mass. — The Holy Cross baseball team had its strongest offensive showing this season against UMass, cruising past the Minutemen by a 17-6 margin on Tuesday, March 22 at Earl Lorden Field.

Five Crusaders posted a three-hit day, while junior lefty Jake McOsker, freshman right-hander Trevor Neff and sophomore right-hander Jack Ambrosino combined to allow just one UMass run over the final five innings of play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Freshman right fielder Connor Cooney drew a bases-loaded walk and freshman center fielder Tyler Mudd had an infield single to score a pair of runs in the opening frame; senior first baseman Nate Wolf then came around to score on a wild pitch to give Holy Cross a 3-0 lead after one.
  • The advantage grew to 6-0 in the third inning after freshman shortstop Jimmy King hit a two-run single to center and freshman third baseman Nick Wang walked with the bases load.
  • The Minutemen chipped away at the Crusader lead, cutting within 6-5 by the end of the fourth inning.
  • Despite the UMass rally, however, the Crusaders pulled away quickly. Freshman Sean Scanlon — who also started Tuesday's contest on the mound, pitching four innings and earning the win — had a sac fly in the top of the fifth to give the Crusaders another run, before Holy Cross had a seven-run outburst in the top of the sixth.
  • Cooney walked to lead off the sixth, and then came home to score after sophomore left fielder Patrick Casserly tripled to center. King singled to score another run, and freshman second baseman Brendan Jones hit a two-run triple to extend the lead to 11-5. Jones later scored on a passed ball.
  • With the bases empty and two out in the seventh, Scanlon and Wolf hit back-to-back singles. Scanlon stole home, and Cooney singled to right field to bring Wolf home, giving the Crusaders a 14-5 lead.
  • With runners on second and third in the seventh, Wang and Scanlon notched back-to-back singles to extend the advantage to 16-5.
  • An RBI double brought UMass within 16-6 in the bottom of the seventh.
  • A single in the top of the ninth gave Scanlon his third RBI of the day and scored King to give the Crusaders a 17-6 lead.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Crusaders' 17 runs marked the most runs scored by the team since April 7, 2013, when Holy Cross defeated Lafayette by a score of 23-4.
  • This also marks Holy Cross' largest margin of victory this season.
  • Wang's double was his 12th of the season, extending his Patriot League-leading total.

DUE UP:

  • The Crusaders are set to play their home opener on Wednesday, March 23 against UMass Lowell.
  • First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Fitton Field.
