Women's hockey comes up short at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team went down to the wire against Providence College, falling 3-2 in overtime on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Schneider Arena.

Junior right wing Darci Johal and freshman defenseman Emilie Fortunato each had a goal for the Crusaders (3-24, 1-21 Hockey East). Senior goaltender Jada Brenon made a career-high 56 saves on the afternoon.

Caroline Peterson had two goals on the day to lead the Friars (10-12-5, 7-11-2 Hockey East). Providence goaltender Sandra Abstreiter posted 27 saves during the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Johal put Holy Cross on top early with a goal at 2:29 of the first period.
  • After a scoreless second period, Peterson scored on a power play at 5:48 of the third period, evening the score for the Friars at 1-1.
  • Moments later, Fortunato capitalized on a power-play opportunity at 6:45 of the third period, putting Holy Cross ahead by one.
  • Providence tied the score again at 2-2 with another goal from Peterson at 14:54.
  • With only 28 seconds left in overtime, Lindsay Bochna scored the golden goal to win the game for the Friars.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Brenon's 56 saves on the day marked a career-high, surpassing her previous career best of 54 against New Hampshire on Nov. 17, 2018.
  • Johal extended her team-leading goal total to seven this season.
  • Fortunato's goal was the first of her collegiate career.

  • Holy Cross is set to host Providence for an afternoon rematch on Sunday, Feb. 6.
