Men's lacrosse falls to Merrimack

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell, 11-9, to Merrimack on Sunday, Feb. 27 at the Kuzniewski Field.

Senior attack Will Spangenberg recorded three goals and an assist on the day for the Crusaders (0-4). Sophomore goaltender Dawson Friers made 14 saves in the contest.

Jack Rooney and Christian Thomas each had four goals and one assist to lead the Warriors (2-2). Goaltender Henry Vogt made nine saves on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Thomas and Tommy Rooney began the first quarter with goals to bring the Warriors to 2-0.
  • Sophomore midfielder Tim O'Callaghan scored his first goal of the season at 12:22 of the first with an assist from junior attack Dean DiNanno.
  • Merrimack's Sean Black and Grant Laman went on to score for the Warriors, bringing the score to 4-1.
  • With 1:53 left in the first period, junior midfielder Connor Boyle scored his first goal of the day to make the score 4-2.
  • At 4:39 of the second period, Thomas netted his second goal of the day for Merrimack to bring the score to 5-2.
  • Junior midfielder T.J. Lynch scored at 5:42 of the second period with an assist from sophomore attack Matt Major to bring the Crusaders within two points of the Warriors.
  • From 10:42 of the second period to 10:12 of the third period, Merrimack went on a scoring streak and brought their lead to seven points.
  • Spangenberg broke the Holy Cross dry spell to a close with 4:48 remaining in the third period with an assist from sophomore attack Cole Kratovil.
  • With 3:22 remaining in the third period, Spangenberg netted his second goal of the day, bringing the score to 10-5.
  • With 9:48 remaining in the game, Lynch scored the first goal of the fourth period to make it 10-6.
  • Boyle recorded his second goal of the game with 4:13 remaining to make the score 10-7 in favor of the Warriors.
  • 11:48 into the final period, Rooney scored the final goal for Merrimack to bring their total to 11.
  • With less than a minute remaining, Boyle and Spangenberg tallied goals to earn themselves a hat trick each on the day, making the final score 11-9.
BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Friers made 14 saves in the contest, while Merrimack's Vogt recorded nine.
  • Merrimack held the slight edge in shots, 42-40, and faceoffs, 12-10.

  • Holy Cross will return to action at Army West Point on March 6 at noon.
