Women's lacrosse drops opener to Fairfield

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell in its season opener to Fairfield, 18-8, on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Kuzniewski Field.

Sophomore midfielder Lauren Drillock had two goals to pace Holy Cross (0-1), while senior attack Jordyn Arakelian and senior attack Jolie Creo each had a goal and an assist.

Libby Rowe had five goals and an assist to lead Fairfield (1-0). Phoebe Proctor made nine saves on the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Fairfield jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but the Crusaders evened things up with 7:59 left in the first with back-to-back goals from Creo and Drillock.
  • The Stags again took a two-goal lead, but senior midfielder Finley Cassidy brought Holy Cross within 4-3. After Fairfield went up 5-3, junior attack Jenna Giardina kept it a one-goal game with a strike with 2:06 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Three straight goals from Fairfield gave the team an 8-4 edge before junior midfielder Charlotte Wittstock put Holy Cross on the board again at 3:35 of the second quarter. The Stags rattled off seven unanswered goals, with Drillock's second goal of the day ending the scoring drought for Holy Cross with 57 seconds left in the third.
  • Arakelian and freshman attack Isabela Miller scored in the fourth quarter, but Fairfield added three fourth-quarter goals and prevented a Holy Cross rally.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Miller's goal with 3:14 remaining in the fourth quarter marked the first of her career.
UP NEXT:
  • The Crusaders host UMass Lowell on Friday, Feb. 18.
  • The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Kuzniewski Field.
