Junior left tackle
Luke Newman and senior linebacker
Liam Anderson of the Holy Cross football team were named to the
2022 Stats Perform FCS All-America Team, as announced on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Newman is a first team honoree, and Anderson is a third team selection.
Newman — who has earned All-Patriot League first team honors in back-to-back seasons — was previously named an All-America selection by the Associated Press this season. He started every game of the 2022 season at left tackle for the Crusaders, who earned the most wins in program history (12) and made a trip to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time since 1983. Newman was a key part of one of the best offensive lines in the nation; during 13 games in 2022, Holy Cross averaged 37.38 points per contest and 449.4 yards of total offense a game. In Patriot League play, the Crusaders averaged 43.0 points per game.
A team captain, Anderson led a strong Holy Cross defense in 2022, one that held opponents to a Patriot League-best 21.5 points per game. Anderson is a two-time All-Patriot League first team selection and a two-time Academic All-Patriot League honoree; he also earned All-ECAC honors in 2021, and received an invitation to the 2023 Hula Bowl, which will be played on Jan. 14. In 2022, Anderson led the Crusaders with 86 total tackles, including 14.5 tackles for a loss of 57 yards. He also recorded three sacks, an interception, two pass breakups, four quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.
