Crusaders suffer overtime loss to Boston College

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team fell to conference opponent Boston College 2-1 in overtime. The Crusaders move to 2-16-1 (1-12-0 Hockey East) and while the Eagles improve to 10-7-1 overall and 8-5-0 in Hockey East play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first period remained scoreless, but moved quickly with both teams creating scoring opportunities. The first period ended with both teams at ten shots on goal.
  • The Crusaders defense created blocked shots and recovered loose pucks to clear the offensive zone.
  • Boston College took the lead at 1:20 in the second period with a goal from Cailin Flynn.
  • The Crusaders answered back at 2:53 with a goal from senior Sofia Smithson. She was assisted by senior Mary Edmonds.
  • Holy Cross stayed out of penalty trouble not drawing any time in the box. They had two power play opportunities in the second and third period but were unable to connect.
  • The score remained tied throughout regulation, forcing the game to enter overtime.
  • Abby Newhook scored the game-winning goal at 2:00 in the OT period.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Senior Carly Beniek appeared in her 100th career game as a Crusader.
  • Smithson tallied her third goal of the season against the Eagles. She ranks third for most points on the team with five.
  • Edmonds recorded her sixth point of the year on Smithson's goal. She holds three goals and three assists on the season.
  • Holy Cross tallied 15 blocked shots compared to the Eagles' six.
  • The Crusaders and Eagles tied for shots on goal with 33 apiece. 
  • Junior Madison Beck tallied 31 saves adding to her season total, 378. She owns a 2.67 goals-against average with a save percentage of .922. 
UP NEXT: 
  • Holy Cross and Boston College will play the second game of their series on Saturday, Dec. 3 in Chestnut Hill. Puck drop is slated for 2 p.m.
