BUFFALO — The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team got back in the win column and defeated Atlantic Hockey Association opponent Canisius 3-1 Friday evening at the LECOM Harborcenter
With the victory, Holy Cross stops a three game skid and moves to 2-7-0, 2-4-0 AHA while the Golden Griffins slip to 2-8-0, 0-3-0 AHA.
THE GOALTENDERS:
- Crusaders: sophomore Thomas Gale: 1-3-0, 23 saves, .958 save percentage.
- Golden Griffins: Jacob Barczewski 1-6-0, 34 saves, .919 save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders took an interference penalty at 6:14 and 29 seconds into the man advantage, the Golden Griffins pounced. Ryan Miotto fired a back door shot off a feed by Keaton Mastrodonato and David Melaragni past Gale for the 1-0 lead.
- Junior Jack Ricketts tied the game. He collected a loose puck in front of the cage and wrapped it off the near post with under three minutes left.
- On the 5-on-3 opportunity, junior Lucas Thorne perfectly placed a cross ice pass to sophomore Liam McLinskey for the one-timer to give Holy Cross a 2-1 lead with 56 seconds left.
- In the second, the Golden Griffins were awarded a penalty shot, Markus Boguslavsky attempted to go five hole, however Gale got his blocker on the puck.
- The Golden Griffins' Matt Vermaeten ripped a forehand over Gale's shoulder inches away from the net. The puck hit the crossbar keeping the Crusaders ahead 2-1 with under 14 minutes left in the third.
- Junior Tyler Ghirardosi gobbled up a loose puck in a scramble of four Golden Griffins, moved right and put home a shot near the right post for the 3-1 lead with 11:11 left.
BEYOND THE BOX:
- The power play goal scored by the Golden Griffins was the 12th power play goal the Crusaders have given up this year. From there, the Crusaders killed 5-of-6 remaining power play opportunities.
- The last time a Crusader opponent was awarded a penalty shot was March 9, 2019 against Robert Morris.
- Freshman Jonathan Balah's assist on Ghirardosi's goal was his first collegiate point.
- The win was the Crusaders' first in Buffalo since 2018.
- Holy Cross outshot Canisius 74-to-40 including a 37-to-24 mark on goal.
