Men’s Ice Hockey ties, takes shootout in Buffalo

BUFFALO — The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie against American Hockey Association opponent Canisius Saturday afternoon.

The Crusaders (2-7-1, 2-4-1) earned five of a possible six points on the weekend taking the shootout 2-0 from the Golden Griffins (2-8-1, 0-3-1) with goals by junior Lucas Thorne and junior Tyler Ghirardosi.

THE GOALTENDERS:
  • Crusaders: sophomore Thomas Gale: 1-3-1, 33 saves, .943 save percentage.
  • Golden Griffins: John Hawthorne 1-2-1, 30 saves, .938 save percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior Conner Jean streaked down the right side of the ice and cleaned up a juicy rebound off the shot of junior Jake Higgins for the 1-0 lead at the 12:32 mark.
  • With 14:24 left in the second, both teams had matching minors which resulted in 4-on-4 action. No team could score a goal in that stretch.
  • Miotto was planted on the back door on the left side and cleaned up a tipped puck to tie the game at 10:51.
  • Junior Alec Cicero and Ricketts teamed up on a 2-on-0 chance with Cicero placing a saucer pass right to left for the one timer that Ricketts netted to regain the lead back to Holy Cross 2-1 at 10:19. Cicero started the break forcing a turnover in the Golden Griffin attacking zone.
  • With less than three minutes to go, the Crusaders went on the penalty kill. Canisius scored with 13 seconds left on their power pay to deadlock the score 2-2.
  • In overtime multiple pucks were put on net but none were cashed in.
  • Thorne and Ghirardosi scored in the shootout for Holy Cross.
BEYOND THE BOX:
  • After being outshot by almost 30 yesterday, Canisius outshot Holy Cross 72-to-60 and 37-to-34 on goal.
  • The last time the Crusaders tied in overtime was January 14, 2022 at home against Canisius. Canisius won the shootout 1-0.
  • Ricketts has scored a goal in each of the last three games
UP NEXT:
  • The Crusaders will be back in action on Tuesday, November 15 at American International with puck drop slated for 7 p.m.
