Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Allen, Donnelly stuff stat sheet in women’s basketball win at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Holy Cross women's basketball junior Janelle Allen and freshman Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly had big time performances as the Crusaders never trailed in a 60-45 victory at Brown on Wednesday evening.

Allen filled the box score scoring a game-high 16 points, securing eight rebounds, and handing out a career-high seven assists while matching a career-best 8-for-9 (88.9%) efficiency from the free throw line. Making her second start of the season, Donnelly produced a monster double-double effort with 11 points, a game-high 15 rebounds, two blocks and a 3-for-5 (60%) showing from downtown.

Sophomore Lindsay Berger was one rebound shy of a double-double scoring 12 points and coming down with nine rebounds for the Crusaders (5-2). Junior Bronagh Power-Cassidy had 11 points and four rebounds as well. Although she did not score, freshman Kaitlyn Flanagan dished out four assists and was a +22 when she was on the court.

Only one player reached double-figures for Brown (5-3). Isabella Mauricio manufactured 10 points on 4-of-15 (26.7%) shooting including 2-of-10 (20.0%) from deep. Flanagan did a good job limiting her production as the Crusaders halted the Bears five game winning streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross began the game on an 11-2 run at the 6:17 mark with Berger putting home three baskets and Power-Cassidy draining a wide open triple on the right wing. From that point on Brown outscored the Crusaders 7-2 to trail 13-9 after the first quarter.
  • Power-Cassidy stopped the 9-2 Bears burst connecting on her second triple, this time from the left wing to increase the lead to 16-11. Brown pulled within two 18-16 thanks to a Page Greenburg three-pointer. Holy Cross led 25-18 at the break and Donnelly recorded a huge block at the buzzer to keep the Crusaders ahead multiple possessions.
  • The Crusaders came out of the locker room on fire on a 12-2 run to build up a 17-point lead, 37-20. Donnelly canned back-to-back three-balls while Power-Cassidy and Berger knocked down jumpers. Brown took a timeout and the Crusader run increased to 15-5 with Allen powering home a layup in the paint while being fouled to lead 40-23. The hosts chipped away and cut the margin to 12 heading into the fourth.
  • The Bears brought the Crusader lead to nine 46-37 when Mauricio hit a second chance three pointer. A few minutes later, she drove baseline and converted a layup while Alyssa Moreland split free throws making it a two possession game, 46-40 with 6:09 left. Mauricio fired another three and hit pulling her team within five, 48-43. On the ensuing possession, Allen dished the rock to sophomore Lauren Huber who was wide open in the corner and she splashed the three while being fouled. Huber buried the freebie to reopen the multiple score edge.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
  • The Crusaders had eight turnovers in the first quarter, they had 12 combined the rest of the game.
  • Brown was 8-for-36 (22.2%) shooting in the first half and 2-for-15 (13.3%) from three-point land.
  • Donnelly snagged nine of her 15 rebounds in the first half.
  • The Crusaders held a team to shooting below 30.0% for the third time this season.
  • Holy Cross improved to 30-4 (.882) under head coach Maureen Magarity when holding opponents under 60 points and 26-3 (.897) when leading at halftime.
