Women’s basketball drops contest to Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College came back from a nine point deficit in the third quarter to defeat the Holy Cross women's basketball team 52-42 Wednesday afternoon at Conte Forum.

The Crusaders (3-2) held a 36-27 lead at the 3:17 mark in the third quarter, the host Eagles (4-2) out produced the Crusaders 25-to-6 over the remainder of the contest for the victory. The BC defensive unit locked down and Holy Cross converted no field goals over the final 8:15.

Sophomore Lindsay Berger was again dominant in the post matching a career-high with 17 points with six rebounds on 8-of-12 (66.7%) shooting. Junior Bronagh Power-Cassidy filled the box score with nine points, nine rebounds and tied a career-high with four steals.

T'Yana Todd played 25 minutes off the bench and scored 20 points for BC going an unblemished 6-for-6 at the charity stripe.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Power-Cassidy knocked down a three on the wing to give the Crusaders a 3-2 lead. Leading 5-4, Power-Cassidy again knocked down a trey from deep to expand the lead to 8-4.
  • At the media timeout, a BC basket was overturned due to a shot clock violation as Holy Cross led 8-2. Sophomore Callie Wright scored a second chance bucket to move the score to 10-4. From that point on the Crusaders went 3:16 without a field goal. Todd was fouled at the buzzer attempting a three. She made all three attempts putting the Eagles ahead 14-12 through one.
  • In the second quarter, freshman Kaitlyn Flanagan cleaned up a miss by junior Janelle Allen for the second chance points to regain the lead 19-17. Senior Addisyn Cross drew two charges on crucial Eagle possessions to keep the Crusaders ahead. With the game tied 21-21, freshman Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly knocked down a wide open wing three and Power-Cassidy converted one of two at the line to make it a 25-21 Crusader lead, an advantage they would take into halftime.
  • Berger scored two straight buckets to begin the second half to increase the lead to 29-21 in favor of the Crusaders. Power-Cassidy drove the paint and kicked out the ball to an open Flanagan in the corner for a trifecta to increase the Crusader margin to 34-27 at the media timeout. BC came within one possession, 36-34 on the strength of a 7-0 run as the Crusaders turned the ball over four times during that span. The score was 36-34 at the end of the third.
  • The BC spurt continued into the fourth quarter as they leveled the game on free throws, 36-36. Two Tania Mair freebies pushed BC ahead 43-40 at the 6:28 mark. Todd drove baseline with 2:16 left and kissed an attempt off the window for the and1 to increase the lead to 46-41.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
  • Holy Cross held BC to 25% (8-for-32) shooting in the first half.
  • BC only led for 11:03 of the contest.
  • 14 of Todd's 20 points came in the second half.
  • Todd is a perfect 22-of-22 on free throw attempts this season.
  • The Eagles have won 12 straight home games against the Crusaders in Conte Forum.

  • Holy Cross remains on the road Sunday, Nov. 27 for a nonconference bout at Dartmouth.
