Holy Cross falls short against No. 7/8 Northeastern

Box Score BOSTON, Mass. — The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team fell short on Friday night losing to the Northeastern Huskies 2-1 in the first game of their weekend series. The Crusaders move to 2-12-1 and 1-10-0 in Hockey East standings while the Huskies improve to 13-2-1 (11-2-1 Hockey East).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Holy Cross got into trouble early drawing two penalties in the first five minutes of play, but were able to successfully kill both power plays.
  • Junior goalie Madison Beck fell into a rhythm early, turning away 17 shots on goal in the first period.
  • The Crusaders came out fast in the second period. They created good shooting opportunities and forced many turnovers in the defensive zone. 
  • The score remained the same through the second period. The Crusaders had 12 blocked shots by the start of the third period. The scoreboard read zeros heading into the third period.
  • At 1:36 in the third period, junior Bryn Saarela took a shot that went off the pipe. Northeastern turned around and managed a shot that slipped through the legs of Beck at 2:53. 
  • Junior defenseman Vaia Graves created a turnover in the neutral zone and took a shot, but was met with a quick glove from Gwyneth Philips at 10:20 in the third.
  • The Huskies an interference penalty at 11:49, but managed a short-handed goal (13:37) to increase the lead to two.
  • Freshman Casey Borgiel fired a shot from the top of the offensive zone, scoring her first career goal at 15:50 after Northeastern drew a five-minute major penalty.
  • The Crusaders pulled Beck from the goal at 18:40, but were unable to capitalize on the extra-skater advantage.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The faceoff battle remained even throughout the game, ending in favor of the Huskies 32-25. Mary Edmonds led the Crusaders with 11 faceoff wins.
  • The Huskies outshot the Crusaders 40-24.
  • Madison Beck posted 38 saves in her ninth start. 
UP NEXT: 
  • Holy Cross will return to Worcester to continue their weekend series with Northeastern. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Hart Center.
