Men’s ice hockey defeated by Mercyhurst

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team was defeated 3-1 Friday evening in Atlantic Hockey Association action by Mercyhurst. The Lakers (2-9-2, 1-2-2) scored three unanswered goals over the second and third periods to beat the Crusaders (2-9-1, 2-6-1 AHA).

THE GOALTENDERS:

  • Lakers: Owen Say 2-4-0, 35 saves, .972 save percentage.
THREE STARS OF THE GAME:

  • 2nd star: Jake Beaune, Mercyhurst: one goal, blocked shot, +2.
  • 3rd star: Junior Lucas Thorne, Holy Cross: one goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross had their first power play chance in the first period and put multiple pucks on net. None of the chances passed the Laker netminder as the game was level 0-0 at the media timeout.
  • The Crusaders killed three Laker power play opportunities in the first including 15 seconds of 5-on-3 action as the contest was level 0-0 through one.
  • With 12:08 left in the second, Thorne redirected a shot from the blue line by sophomore Matt Shatsky to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
  • There was under two minutes to go in the second period when the Lakers tied the contest. Jonathan Bendorf ripped a shot to the cage that was misdirected off a Crusader skate and found a wide open Jake Beaune who buried chance near the right slot.
  • In the third with 12:35 to go, the Crusaders had an odd man rush, junior Alec Cicero had the puck off a deflection but his shot went wide.
  • At the 4:23 mark, Joseph Maziarz put home the eventual game winner on the power play and Garrett Dahm scored a short handed empty netter.
BEYOND THE BOX:
  • The Crusaders had 36 shots on goal compared to the Lakers 25.
  • So far this week Holy Cross has been outscored 7-to-2.
