Men’s soccer ties Navy 1-1

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore forward Evan Jones scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season, as the Holy Cross men's soccer team played Navy to a 1-1 tie at Linda Johnson Smith Stadium. The Crusaders move to 4-8-4 overall and 0-4-3 in the Patriot League, while the Midshipmen now stand 4-3-7 on the year and 2-1-4 in the conference.

Holy Cross opened the game by taking a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute on Jones' goal. The play began with sophomore midfielder Marcus Williams sending the ball to senior midfielder Matt McGonigle in the right corner of the field. McGonigle then dribbled toward the box before sending a cross which Jones flicked in off his left foot from four yards.

Navy responded with a goal in the 40th minute to tie the game up at 1-1. Charlie Kriel sent a throw in into the penalty box, where Zach Wagner headed it in front of the goal. A.J. Schuetz was there to knock the ball home from 12 yards out in the center.

The Crusaders would have several good scoring chances in the second half, but were unable to convert again as the game ended in a draw.

Holy Cross finished the game with a 14-7 advantage in shots, while both teams took three corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Josh Tubbs made three saves for the Crusaders and Pierce Holbrook tallied five saves for the Midshipmen.

Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 29, when it heads to Bucknell for a 2:00 p.m. game.
