BURLINGTON, Vt. — The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team traveled to Burlington Saturday night for a nonconference tilt with Vermont and were defeated 6-0 in the Gutterson Fieldhouse.

The loss sends the Crusaders to 1-5-0 overall while Vermont nets their first victory of the year and moves to 1-4-0.

THE GOALTENDERS:
  • Crusaders: Junior Jason Grande: 1-2-0, 7 saves, .700 save percentage; freshman Louden Hogg: 17 saves, .850 save percentage.
  • Catamounts: Gabe Carriere 1-2-0, 12 saves, 1.000 save percentage.
THREE STARS OF THE GAME:

  • 2nd star: Will Zapernick, Vermont: one goal, one point, +2.
  • 3rd star: Gabe Carriere, Vermont.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Six seconds in the Crusaders were on the power play due to a Vermont slash. Holy Cross mustered only one shot during the man advantage. Immediately after their power play expired, Holy Cross turned the puck over on their blue line which led to Will Zapernick firing a wrist shot, glove side on a counterattack for the 1-0 Catamount lead with 17:48 left in the first.
  • At the 11:21 mark, Joel Maatta cleaned up a tipped centering pass and squeaked a shot through Grande's five hole for the 2-0 Vermont edge.
  • The Crusaders went on the power play early in the second stanza again this time 39 seconds in. They were able to get off three shots, but none of them tickled the twine.
  • Following another penalty kill, Finn Evans lofted a cross ice pass to a streaking Jens Richards who scorched a wrist shot past Grande for their third goal of the game at the 16:30 mark.
  • Hogg replaced Grande between the pies midway through the second period.
  • With 18:33 left in the third, Porter Schachle added on a top shelf tally for the 4-0 Vermont lead.
  • Timofei Spitserov and Carter Long tacked on goals late in the period.
BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Jens Richards' goal was his first collegiate tally.
  • The Crusaders were shutout for the second time this year.
  • Vermont outshot Holy Cross 30-to-12.
UP NEXT:
  • The Crusaders continue their road swing next weekend with two Atlantic Hockey contests starting Friday, October 28 at RIT with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
