WORCESTER, Mass.— The Holy Cross volleyball team fell, 3-1, to the New Hampshire Wildcats on Wednesday night in Blaney Gymnasium.
The Crusaders now sit at 1-7 on the season, while the Wildcats sit at 4-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set one began as a back-and-forth affair before the Wildcats posted three straight points to take an 18-14 lead. UNH never looked back and claimed the 25-18 victory.
- Holy Cross battled back from being down 6-2 to open the second set and knotted the match up at 11-11. Powered by a four-point, with two blocks from Lauren Halverson, and then a five-point run with a service ace from Abbie Lane, the Crusaders took set two, 25-23.
- In a reversal from set two, Holy Cross jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third. However, UNH would battle back and tie the set at 9-9 before going on to win, 25-21 and go up 2-1 overall.
- New Hampshire opened the final set strong and used a five-point run to lead 11-6 early. The Wildcats then used another five-point run to earn a 22-14 lead. Holy Cross then held off match point six times before final succumbing to the Wildcats, 25-22 and 3-1 overall.
BEYOND THE BOX:
- Junior Gracyn Benck led all players with a season-high 16 kills.
- Junior Halle Carter posted her second double-double of the season with 37 assists and 13 kills.
- Freshman Abbie Lane tallied the second double-double of her career with 12 kills and 16 digs.
- Freshman Lauren Halverson led all players with four blocks.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders will get another crack at the Wildcats as they open against New Hampshire at the Dartmouth Invitational on Friday, Sept. 10 at 2:30 p.m. Holy Cross will also face Connecticut and Dartmouth at the tournament.
