WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior defender
Avery Gardner scored the first goal of her collegiate career, but the Holy Cross women's soccer team was defeated by Army West Point 5-1 at Linda Johnson Smith Stadium. The Crusaders fall to 1-8-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Patriot League, while the Black Knights improve to 4-4-2 on the season and 1-0-1 in the conference.
Army opened the game by scoring four times in the first half. Jasmine Talley netted a pair of goals for the Black Knights before halftime, while Trinity Garay and Izzy Fontana scored once each. In the second half, Gardner put Holy Cross on the board when she headed in a corner kick by junior defender
Brooke Robinson. Army then concluded the scoring on Fontana's second goal of the night.
The Black Knights finished the day with a 17-11 advantage in shots and a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, Sept. 26, when they travel to Lehigh for a 12:00 p.m. game.
