Baseball comes up short against Merrimack

ANDOVER, Mass. – The Holy Cross baseball team fell short against Merrimack, 7-5, on Wednesday, May 5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after senior shortstop Cam Meyer scored on an error.
  • Merrimack jumped out to a 4-1 lead after scoring three runs in the first and tacking on a solo home run in the second inning.
  • After freshman catcher Michael Donahoe hit a single to lead off the third, Meyer hit a two-run homer to bring Holy Cross within 4-3.
  • Merrimack added another run in the bottom of the third, and extended its lead to 7-3 by the fifth inning, when Michael Jamele hit a solo homer.
  • Sophomore center fielder Ben Dellacono hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh, bringing the Crusaders within 7-4.
  • Senior first baseman Andrew Selima hit a one-out double in the eighth, and later scored on a single to right field by freshman right fielder Jake McElroy, but the Crusaders could rally no further, going 1-2-3 in the ninth.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Wednesday's game marked the second consecutive game in which Dellacono has hit a home run.
  • Dellacono and Meyer are tied for the team lead with three home runs each this season.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross will host Lehigh for four Patriot League contests on Saturday, May 8 and Sunday, May 9.
  • Each doubleheader is set to begin at noon both days at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
