Baseball falls to Army

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross baseball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader against Army West Point on Sunday, May 2.

GAME 1:
Army 6, Holy Cross 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Army jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning and extended its lead to 6-0 by the third.
  • Holy Cross' starter, senior left-hander Luke Dawson, did not allow any Army hits over the next three innings.
  • The Crusaders put runners on first and second with nobody out in the fourth; senior first baseman Andrew Selima scored from second base after Kirkpatrick singled through the right side to cut within 6-1.
  • Senior left fielder Evan Blum notched a one-out triple in the fifth inning, and gave the Crusaders another run after junior catcher Angelo D'Acunto had a sac fly.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Nick Escoto made his season debut and had a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh, but the Crusaders also went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After two scoreless innings, Army struck first in the third inning before tacking on three runs in the fourth inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
  • Two more runs came in for the Black Knights in the sixth, and their lead was extended to 8-0 in the top of the eighth after a fielder's choice and an RBI single.
  • The Black Knights allowed just three Holy Cross hits over the first seven innings; sophomore center fielder Ben Dellacono hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth for the Crusaders' only run of the game.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • After hitting his first career home run on Saturday, Blum's triple in Sunday's Game 1 was also the first of his career.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross will travel to Merrimack for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, May 5.
  • First pitch in Andover, Mass. is set for 6 p.m.
