Baseball falls to Merrimack

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross baseball team fell to Merrimack, 12-11, on Wednesday, April 7.

Senior right fielder Peter Dudunakis drove in four runs with a double and home run; freshman second baseman Sam Kirkpatrick also had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. Sophomore center fielder Ben Dellacono had an RBI double and scored two runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Merrimack put a run on the board in the first inning after an RBI single.
  • The Crusaders tied things up in the bottom half of the inning; senior designated hitter Evan Blum singled through the right side, and Dudunakis hit a double to deep center to score Blum.
  • The Warriors scored three runs in the second to extend their lead to 4-1.
  • Senior shortstop Cam Meyer was hit by a pitch and Kirkpatrick singled to put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the third; Dudunakis hit a two-out home run to center field, tying things up at 4-4.
  • Merrimack took a 6-4 lead in the top of the fourth, but Holy Cross took its first lead of the contest in the bottom of the fourth. Dellacono hit an RBI double deep into the right-center gap to score sophomore designated hitter Jordan Petrushka, and Dellacono and senior first baseman Andrew Selima scored on error to make it a 7-6 lead for the Crusaders.
  • The Warriors regained the lead in the next half-inning after an RBI groundout and a wild pitch scored a pair of runs.  
  • The back-and-forth game continued into the bottom of the sixth when the Crusaders tacked on three more runs to take a 10-8 lead. Selima and Dellacono were both hit by a pitch, and came around to score when Meyer's bunt resulted in two fielding errors. Kirkpatrick then followed with an RBI single to score Meyer.
  • Selima hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to tack on another run.
  • Trailing 11-8, Merrimack rallied in the top of the ninth, using a bases-loaded single and a bases-clearing double to score four total runs and take an 12-11 lead.
 BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Dudunakis now has two home runs on the year, and leads the team with 14 RBI.
  • D'Acunto had a leadoff double in the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross will host Army West Point in a Patriot League doubleheader on Saturday, April 10.
  • First pitch at Fitton Field is set for 1 p.m.
