Football falls to South Dakota State in FCS playoffs

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Holy Cross football team fell to top-seeded South Dakota State University, 31-3, in the first round of the NCAA football championship subdivision playoffs on Saturday, April 24 at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

Senior safety Joe Lang and sophomore linebacker Jacob Dobbs each finished with 13 tackles; Lang had seven solo tackles, while Dobbs added in a tackle for loss.

Junior running back Peter Oliver rushed for 52 yards, and senior running back Macklin Kortebein had 53 all-purpose yards, including 33 rushing yards. Junior wide receiver Spencer Gilliam added in six receptions for 55 yards for the Crusaders.

South Dakota State (6-1) finished with 439 yards of total offense. As a team, the Jackrabbits rushed for 281 yards, led by 156 yards from Isaiah Davis, and quarterback Mark Gronowski had 12 completions for 153 yards.

The Crusaders, making their second consecutive appearance in the FCS playoffs after winning back-to-back Patriot League titles, end their spring 2021 season with a 3-1 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Though Holy Cross had the ball at the SDSU 32-yard line on third-and-seven on their first drive of the game, an incomplete pass followed by a blocked field goal kept the Crusaders off the board early in the first quarter.
  • After the Jackrabbits had a touchdown waved off due to an ineligible man down the field, Gronowski connected with Jaxon Janke on an 11-yard pass to give SDSU a 7-0 lead.
  • Early in the second quarter, the Holy Cross defense kept the Jackrabbits out of the end zone despite SDSU making it to the three-yard line; a field goal made it 10-0 SDSU with 11:04 to go in the half.
  • Gronowski had a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jadon Janke with 3:59 to go in the second quarter, giving SDSU a 17-0 advantage.
  • Junior kicker Derek Ng made a 47-yard field goal with 29 seconds remaining in the first half to put Holy Cross on the board and make it a 17-3 game.
  • After a quick SDSU three-and-out, the Jackrabbits recovered a fumble by the Crusaders on a punt return at the 45-yard line. A 45-yard touchdown pass from Gronowski extended the Jackrabbits' lead to 24-3 with 10:33 to go in the third.
  • Davis ran in a 60-yard touchdown to give SDSU a 31-3 advantage with 11:11 remaining in the game.
