Men’s lacrosse edged by Colgate in overtime

HAMILTON, N.Y.— The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Colgate 12-11 in overtime on Saturday, March 6 at Andy Kerr Stadium. After the Crusaders posted a four-goal fourth quarter to push the game to overtime, Colgate scored as time expired in the overtime period to win the game.

The Crusaders (1-1, 0-1 Patriot League) fell into a 6-0 hole in the first period, but battled all the way back to push the game to overtime. Sophomore classmates Dean DiNanno and T.J. Lynch led the way for the Crusaders with three goals each. DiNanno added on an assist for a four-point outing.

Sophomore Jayce Lambert claimed two goals including the goal with under 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter to push the game to overtime. Sophomore Cameron Magalotti, junior Will Spangenberg and senior Brad Baker rounded out the scoring contingent for the Crusaders.

Defensively, junior goalie A.J. Fox had 12 saves and two caused turnovers in his second start for the Crusaders. Freshman Peter Roegge also caused two turnovers on the evening.

Colgate (1-2, 1-0 Patriot League) was led by Mike Hawkins who had six points off four goals and two assists. Additionally, Thomas Colucci went 19-for-23 at the faceoff x for the Raiders.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Raiders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, just over five minutes into the game. They followed that up with three more quick strikes to build a 6-0 lead. Dean DiNanno closed out the first quarter with a goal to pull the score to 6-1 at the end of the first quarter.
  • After a brief delay due to the lights going out, the Crusaders opened the second quarter on a two-goal run thanks to Jayce Lambert and Cameron Magalotti. Dean DiNanno once again closed out the scoring for the Crusaders with a goal out front to cut the deficit to 6-4.
  • Each side posted three goals in the third quarter, with T.J. Lynch grabbing his first two of the season in the frame. Will Spangenberg pulled the Crusaders within two with a goal with just nine seconds left on the clock in the third frame. 
  • Dean DiNanno scored just over two minutes into the final frame to bring the Crusaders within one, with the score at 9-8. The Raiders then went on to score two unanswered goals to take an 11-8 lead. Holy Cross would score three unanswered goals to push the game to overtime with Jayce Lambert scoring the game-tying goal.
  • Colgate's Jacob Sposita scored the game-winning goal with no time on the clock to give the Raiders a 12-11 victory in overtime.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Junior Will Spangenberg extended his point streak to 23 games with his goal and assist.
  • Sophomore Dean DiNanno tied a career-high with four points off three goals and one assist.
  • Sophomore Jayce Lambert set a career-high in points with three off two goals and one assist.  
  • Junior Chris Conlin has recorded a caused turnover and every single one of his collegiate games and extended that streak tonight with one caused turnover.
