Baseball drops home opener to UMass

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross baseball team fell to UMass, 6-2, in its home opener on Wednesday, March 24.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Garret Keough had a gem of a start, throwing four hitless innings with five strikeouts.
  • Freshman second baseman Sam Kirkpatrick got the Crusaders on the board first, sending a single through the right side to score senior shortstop Cam Meyer.
  • UMass had a four-run fifth inning to jump out to a 4-1 lead, and added two more runs in the top of the seventh.
  • Freshman third baseman Jake McElroy led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to left field, and senior first baseman Andrew Selima walked to put runners on first and second; the Crusaders got a run back after senior right fielder Peter Dudunakis hit a double to center.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • This was the first Holy Cross baseball game played at Fitton Field in 682 days.
  • Meyer and Keough, who missed their sophomore seasons in 2019, played in their first games at Fitton Field in 1,053 days.
  • Kirkpatrick leads the Crusaders with five RBI this season.
