Baseball falls to Army West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Holy Cross baseball team came up short in both games of a doubleheader against Army West Point on Saturday, March 27.

GAME ONE:
Army 7, Holy Cross 3 (seven innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders led off the first with back-to-back doubles from junior left fielder Nate Wolf and sophomore center fielder Ben Dellacono, giving Holy Cross a 1-0 lead.
  • Army immediately tied the game up in the bottom of the first, and then added two runs in the second, three more runs in the third and another run in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead.
  • The Crusaders loaded up the bases in the sixth inning after back-to-back walks were issued to freshman pinch hitter Jake McElroy and freshman third baseman Thomas Latham, and Dellacono was hit by a pitch. Wolf then walked to push in one run; Dellacono would later score on an error to bring Holy Cross within 7-3.
GAME TWO:
Army 6, Holy Cross 5 (10 innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross got ahead to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. After Wolf walked and senior left fielder Evan Blum was hit by a pitch, senior first baseman Andrew Selima drove both in with a double to center. Junior catcher Angelo D'Acunto then sent Selima home with another double.
  • The Crusaders added one more run in the seventh after Selima singled to lead off the frame, and Latham brought him in with a two-out single to give Holy Cross a 4-0 advantage.
  • Army got its first runs of the contest in the bottom of the seventh with a home run, an RBI triple and an RBI double to cut within 4-3.
  • The Black Knights tied things up with a home run in the bottom of the eighth.
  • The Crusaders loaded the bases in the top of the 10th, and Blum was hit by a pitch to drive in a run and give Holy Cross a one-run lead.
  • However, Army hit a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning to give the Black Knights a walkoff win.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross is set to host Army on Sunday, March 28 to close out the weekend series.
  • First pitch at Fitton Field is set for 3 p.m.
