Women's basketball earns victory against Army

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team posted a 61-49 victory over Army West Point on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex.

Freshman guard Bronagh Power-Cassidy led all scorers with 15 points; junior forward Oluchi Ezemma had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Avery LaBarbera also finished in double figures with 10 points while chipping in six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Freshman Cara McCormack added in nine points for Holy Cross (5-4, 5-4 Patriot League).

Alisa Fallon led Army (8-8, 5-6 Patriot League) with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kate Murray also reached double-digit points with 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A quick 7-0 run gave the Crusaders a 15-6 lead with 4:55 to go in the first. That lead grew to nine after sophomore Addisyn Cross hit a basket with less than two seconds on the clock to give Holy Cross a 21-12 advantage after one quarter.
  • The Crusaders opened the second quarter on an 8-1 run, capped by a steal and putback layup by LaBarbera, to push the Holy Cross lead to 16 just three-and-a-half minutes into the second. The second-quarter lead grew to 17, 35-18, after an offensive board and layup by Ezemma with 2:15 to go.
  • Army made its only three of the game with 44 seconds left in the half, but LaBarbera immediately responded with a deep three to give Holy Cross a 40-23 advantage to close out the first half.
  • Right out of the gate in the second half, Power-Cassidy connected with Ezemma for a jumper just 11 seconds in. Holy Cross' lead grew as high as 21 points after a layup from Cross with 6:34 left in the third quarter.
  • Army closed out the third quarter on a 6-0 run to cut within 51-36. Holy Cross rebuilt a 21-point advantage, 59-38, with 6:33 to go; the Black Knights continued to push late, outscoring Holy Cross 11-2 over the remainder of the game.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Ezemma's double-double was her second of the year.
  • Power-Cassidy reached double figures for the fifth time this season.
  • The Crusaders held Army to just 1-of-17 shooting from 3-point range; this is the worst 3-point percentage by a Holy Cross opponent since the Crusaders held Boston University to 0-for-6 3-point shooting on Jan. 13, 2018.

UP NEXT:
  • The Crusaders close out the weekend series with a visit to Army West Point on Sunday, Feb. 7.
